How do you know whether your laser cutting project is being handled correctly?
Here are the most common challenges, and solutions, with laser cutting today:
1. Cutting Thick Metals
- Thicker materials are generally harder to cut than thinner ones. For carbon steel plates thicker than 0.4 inches, there can be challenges related to heat conductivity, laser focus, and surface reflection.
- Solution: Focus the laser beam, reduce the spot size, and consider gas-assisted technology to prevent combustion and remove debris from the kerf.
2. Uneven Cutting
- Part geometry plays a significant role. Small corners or areas absorb more heat, making consistent cutting speeds difficult to achieve.
- Complex part geometries also lead to uneven cuts.
- Solution: Optimize part design and consider material sensitivity1.
3. Presence of Burrs
- Burrs (rough edges) can occur during laser cutting, especially on thicker materials.
- Solution: Adjust cutting parameters, use assist gases, and ensure proper focus to minimize burrs.
4. Deformations with Small Holes
- Small holes may warp or deform due to heat concentration during cutting.
- Solution: Use smaller beam sizes, optimize hole design, and consider post-processing techniques.
5. Insufficient Cutting Depth
- If the laser doesn’t penetrate deep enough, it can result in incomplete cuts.
- Solution: Adjust power, speed, and focus settings to achieve the desired cutting depth.
